The first is about money. The Democratic National Committee mortgaged its headquarters to help finance elections and is now entering the final stretch of the midterms with more debt than cash.
The second is about democracy. The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee has proposed putting South Carolina first in the 2028 presidential primary calendar, followed by Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan, and Virginia.
These may look like separate issues, but both come back to trust.
Democrats need people to believe the party will spend their contributions responsibly. They also need voters to believe that they will be allowed to choose candidates without party leaders deciding the outcome in advance.
The good news is that neither problem is impossible to fix. Democrats still have an enormous coalition, millions of motivated voters, and a genuine opportunity to win the House in 2026. But the party has to start treating trust as something it earns, not something it is automatically owed.
We are the Democratic Party. Our processes should be democratic.
