The Voter ID Debate Is Hurting Democrats
Common sense keeps getting sidelined
I saw a video circulating recently from Kamala Harris, from about a year ago, talking about voter ID. It was the usual framing. Proving who you are is somehow hard. Asking for ID is somehow exclusionary. And it made me stop and ask a very simple question.
Have Democrats finally stopped this voter ID bullshit yet?
Because if we have not, we are doing ourselves real damage.
At some point, we have to be honest with ourselves. Requiring an ID to vote is not racist. It is not discriminatory. It is basic. It is common sense. You are participating in one of the most important civic acts in a democracy. Proving who you are should not be controversial.
And yet, here we are. Still debating it. Still treating it like some radioactive third rail issue.
Why has the Democratic Party not just ended this debate? Why has the DNC, the DCCC, party leadership, Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer, somebody, not stood up and said clearly, “Yes, you need an ID to vote. And yes, we will make sure you can get one.”
Full stop.
That position is not extreme. It is not right wing. It is what most Americans already believe.
This Is Not the Hill to Die On
I understand that for some Democrats, this feels like a hot take. I get the objections. What if people cannot afford an ID? What if they live far from a DMV? What if they do not have transportation?
Those are real concerns. But none of them logically lead to the conclusion that IDs should not be required.
If you live two hours from a DMV, you still need a driver’s license to drive. The distance does not eliminate the requirement. It means you have to solve the access problem.
Those are two different questions. Democrats keep conflating them, and it is hurting them.
We should be saying this instead: Yes, you need an ID to vote. And yes, we will help you get one.
That is it. That is the message.
The Solutions Are Not Complicated
One of the most frustrating parts of this debate is how fake the difficulty is. This is not a hard problem to solve if you actually want to solve it.
How about do something simple. Make a mobile ID and voter registration units.
You buy an old food truck or a van. Something with a big service window. You throw a wrap on it that says Board of Elections or Mobile DMV. You put a couple laptops inside. A printer. Internet access. Equipment that most government offices already have sitting around.
For ten to fifteen thousand dollars, maybe less, you now have a mobile unit that can travel all over a county. Publish a schedule. Show up at churches, libraries, senior centers, rural towns, apartment complexes. People walk up, bring whatever documents they have, and get help.
No birth certificate? No Social Security card? Fine. The unit can help request records on the spot. Walk people through what they need. Get the process started.
While you are there, register them to vote.
This is not some futuristic idea. It is basic logistics.
Make IDs Free
The other obvious solution is cost. If cost is the barrier, eliminate it.
Many states already do this.
Oklahoma allows people experiencing homelessness to obtain state ID cards for free.
North Carolina has a No Fee ID program for voting.
Texas offers a free Election Identification Certificate, including free birth certificate access if needed.
Michigan waives ID fees for seniors, veterans, legally blind residents, people receiving public assistance, and people experiencing housing insecurity.
States already know how to do this. Dems just need to stop being wimps about this issue.
And for the record, Ohio’s online DMV system is actually very good. I have used it. Registration. ID renewal. E check. All from home. If someone does not have a laptop or Wi-Fi, public libraries exist. Those computers are already there.
Again, this is solvable.
Why This Matters Politically
Here is the part Democrats seem to be missing. This issue is wildly unpopular for us. Most Americans already think voter ID is reasonable. When Democrats argue against it, we look unserious at best and dishonest at worst.
It feeds into race baiting. It feeds into conspiracy thinking. And it hands Republicans an issue they should not own.
We are not defending democracy by pretending identification does not matter. We are weakening it.
You can acknowledge that access problems exist without pretending the requirement itself is wrong. You can do both at the same time.
So Here Is the Ask
Democrats, please stop this.
Stop acting like voter ID is racist. Stop tiptoeing around it. Stop letting consultants tell you this is too risky to touch.
Say it plainly.
You need an ID to vote. We will help you get one. We will make it free. We will bring it to you if necessary.
That position is fair. It is defensible. And it is what most people already believe.

its like congress members are completely out of touch with their constituency
no normal american wants no VOTER ID.
This also corresponds with immigration reform too.
some people can’t get ID because they can’t become US citizens either because immigration laws haven’t allowed it, or because they shouldn’t be here in the first place. not trying to start the borders debate, but want to throw in my opinion here as well. open borders are bad, but immigration needs to also be reasonable as well. Its ridiculous we’ve had people living in this country for 20+ years who have not been able to convert to full citizenship, every reasonable person agrees this needs to improve.
so the argument by Dems is just no voter ID, which is lazy and irresponsible. become a citizen, get ID, pay taxes. I also know thats not as simple as that, but this is a comment and not an article
thank you matt, for helping me know that its still possible to talk across aisles
Please and thank you
